Samsung's 4K OLED gaming screen is now so cheap that I don't even care about the SmartTV guck.
Price check: Amazon $999.99
" data-widget-type="deal" data-render-type="editorial">I know that I said to avoid this monitor, if your sanity was important. I said the Samsung Odyssey G8 G80SD was a fantastic monitor, but underneath it all. Newegg is now selling it for $999, a $300 discount on its original $1,299 price.
In my original review, I had two major issues with this 32-inch 4K beauty running at 240 Hz. The first was the user interface which prioritized SmartTV functionality everywhere and then added to the frustration by a multitude of separate OSD menus that overlapped.
The price was also hard to justify when compared to cheaper competitors like the MSI MPG 321URX. This Newegg deal has largely mitigated the second issue. What about the SmartTV nonsense and stupid OSDs?
It is absolutely mind-numbingly annoying. Once you've figured out the interface and set it up, you won't need to touch the interface or use SmartTV gadgets if you don’t want to.
I don't see the point in having a PC Monitor that requires you to set it up as a Smart TV first before you can use as a computer monitor. It's only a minor inconvenience, and you can use the monitor as a PC monitor afterward. It's a phase-change heating pipe system that is built into the back of the panel. Samsung claims it's five-times better than the graphite sheet competing brands use."
You get the same stunning OLED experience, but with crisp 4K visuals. The pixel density also fixes all font rendering issues associated with lower-resolution OLED panels.
This is the best PC gaming display technology, unless you prefer an ultrawide screen. Even if you prefer the crazy 32:9 aspect ratio monitors, they are not available with a high pixel density.
It's nice to see that Samsung has already taken a big cut in price. I'd be willing to put up with the silly interface for a 4K QD/OLED display that is one of, if not, the best.
It's also available on Amazon at the same price. If it's sold out at Newegg then head over to Amazon.
