Steam's Turn Based RPG Fest offers a lot of discounts for leveling up your characters
Steam's almost constant, genre-specific festivals, which are theoretically ongoing, make my eyes glaze over. When there are so many sales, it's hard to believe that any of them are worth your attention. Steam's genre fest is grabbing my attention. The Turn-based RPG Fest, which runs until October 7, offers deep discounts on games that you can easily spend dozens of hours in character-building and tactical-battling.
The Turn-based RPG Fest is a great opportunity to explore a wide range of genres. There's a high chance that a turn-based title on your wishlist is currently on sale. Here are some suggestions on where to start. I've personally played a lot of these discounted games, so I can vouch that they're worth your time.
XCOM 2, arguably a modern standard by which other turn-based strategy games are measured, is on sale for only $3/PS2/EUR2.49 - a 95% discount. You won't find a better value for money when it comes to building a team of elite aliens who will break your heart if they are brutalized by a Chrysalid.
Marvel's Midnight Suns, which follows the Firaxis tactic, is also enjoying a massive price cut. It is currently 75% off, at $15/PS12.49/EUR15. The card-based RPG, which features some great superhero hangouts, was our runner-up in 2022 for Game of the year. I'll support any games where you can invite Wolverine into a book club.
It's a good time to play an Atlus RPG for a warmup, if you have a few hundred hours spare. Persona 4 Golden is my Persona because it has a small-town slice-of life feel that's really good. It's also currently only $12/PS11/EUR12 (down 40% from its usual price).
Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus is a great option for those who are coming from Space Marine 2 but still need their 40K fix. It's only $9/PS7.49/EUR9. Instead of power armored Space Marines you'll be able to command the machine-worshipping AdMech Techpriests. This 40K faction blends far-future mechanic proficiency with ritualistic reverence to create some of the best flavoring in the setting.
Battletech, a sci-fi game with a turn-based strategy element, puts you in charge of a Mechwarrior mercenary squad in the middle of an interstellar war. It's so good that I've already reinstalled it after writing about it. Right now, it's only $10/PS9/EUR10. Into the Breach is another great mech RPG, currently $7.49/PS6/EUR7.49. It creates a wonderful combat puzzle with each of its roguelike fights.
My last recommendation has a few qualifications. Mordheim: City of the Damned has a clunky interface. It's confusing. It's not very pretty. After spending enough time learning its UI, mechanics and mercenary management system, the Warhammer Board Game adaptation became one of our favorite mercenary RPGs. I transformed a ragtag band of ratmen to Mordheim's most formidable combatants. It only cost them half their limbs, but you'll pay much less. Mordheim is only $2/PS2/EUR2 until the Turn-based RPG Fest concludes next week.
