The 2025 videogame Grammy nominees include the usual AAA titles and one surprising indie.
The 2025 Grammy nominations for videogames soundtracks have been released. A slate of big-money titles is joined by a scrappy upstart to compete for the prize. The award could go to Avatar Frontiers of Pandora or God of War Ragnarok Valhalla. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or Star Wars Outlaws. Or, and you didn't expect this at all, I swear, Wizardry: Testing Grounds of the mad Overlord, the remake of RPG Classic Wizardry.
Winifred Phillips, a veteran video game composer, composed the soundtrack. Her work has been featured in a wide range of games over the years. From the first God of War to Assassin's Creed 3 and the Total War series. Philips has already won some second-tier awards for the soundtrack. She received two NYX Game Awards as well as a Telly Award.
The other nominees are not jokes: They are all heavyweights in the world of videogames and movies, including Bear McCreary, a long-time favorite of sci-fi, fantasy, and fantasy composers. McCreary composed God of War Ragnarok Valhalla. Wizardry's score is definitely the underdog. You can listen to the soundtrack on Philips' Bandcamp, or on Spotify.
Eurogamer reported that the official announcement for 2025's award show includes a category for composers who have created an original score for interactive multimedia. These awards will be presented on February 2, 2025. They are voted by the Recording Academy voting members, which are "music creators including artists, producers and songwriters", according to the Grammys.
Here's what the Grammys say: The Award for Best Score Soundtracks for Video Games and Other Interactive Media is an "Award given to composers for a score created for video games or other interactive media, either as a complement to them, or specifically for them."
This means that you will end up with the following list of nominees.
- Avatar : Frontiers of Pandora -- Pinar toprak, composer
- God Of War Ragnarok : Valhalla -- Bear McCreary is the composer
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 -- John Paesano as composer
- Star Wars Outlaws -- Wilbert R. Roget, II.
- Wizardry : Proving grounds of the Mad Overlord -- Winifred Philips, composer
