The best VR boxing and my favorite VR games in general are getting a sequel soon with multiplayer.
The Thrill of the Fight is the best VR boxing game I've played. The AI opponents could have used more variety, but the game feels more like boxing, a hobby of mine, than any other VR boxing games I've tried. I also like the passthrough feature, which lets me see where I am in the room, so I don't worry about weaving into the filing cabinet.
It's either my favorite VR game (I admit I haven't completed Half-Life: Alyx yet) or the one that I've enjoyed and exercised the most. The good news is that a sequel is in development and will be available in early access in November.
The Thrill of the Fight 2 has multiplayer support, unlike the first game. I'm a bit disappointed that the early-access release will only include multiplayer, but later it will have a singleplayer option. After the early-access launch, creator Ian Fitz - who's working with Fruit Ninja developers Halfbrick Studios to develop the sequel - says the dev team will start work on an "AI that has more abilities and combat smarts than the first game"
Fitz says that a version of The Thrill Of The Fight 2 for PC-tethered VR is "very probable." I've played the first game both tethered and untethered, and although it is a better experience with no cable (it's not a graphically-intensive game), I managed to get a lot out of it even with the back of my head attached to my PC. It may sacrifice some realism, but it keeps your opponent on one side of ring so you don't get wrapped up.
Quest headsets may be the best option here, as this is not always true when you are playing against a human opponent.
Fitz says that The Thrill of the Fight 2 won't just introduce multiplayer, but will also launch with a "new combat system with improved physics, damage calculations, and a redesigned interface to mimic real boxing as closely as possible." It will feature skill-based matching as well as private matchmaking.
Meta Quest will offer The Thrill Of The Fight 2 in early access starting November 21. Fitz recently answered a few questions about the game.
