The Borderlands movie goes from disaster to farce when the guy who rigged Claptrap claims that neither he nor model artist are credited
Borderlands' reception has me feeling nostalgic. I remember the days when videogames and movies were always terrible, or at least half-decent. The short version of the story is that people really, really dislike it. The film is surrounded by words like "lifeless", obnoxious", and "baffling". The only good news is that one positive review has raised the Rotten Tomatoes rating from 0% to 3.0%.
It's a mess. The film has now made things worse by failing to credit the key production staff who created one of Borderlands main characters. Robbie Reid (also known as "Robbie Reid The Rigger"), who worked on rigging Claptrap's model for the movie for five months, says he did it all. This process gives a CG character a skeleton so animators can manipulate it. It's a vital job, and when it comes down to Claptrap we're dealing with arguably Borderlands most recognisable character.
Reid said on X that "this time 3 years ago, I was rigging Claptrap's CG asset for the Borderlands film." "I worked on Claptrap for 5 consecutive month. "Neither I nor the artist who modeled him (Whom I worked with for the entire time) got a credit in the film."
Reid continues to say that it is the first time that such a thing happened to him. He considers himself "exceptionally fortunate", but "it still hurts" that the film that finally broke the streak was my last at a studio. And for such an important character too."
Borderlands' IMDB credits eight riggers in various disciplines (electrical effects, visual effects, and stunts), but Reid isn't listed.
The Claptrap model Reid created appears to be used in the final film. Reid speculates that the omission could be due to the fact that he and his artist left their studio in 2021, and "it has taken this long for the film to come out". Randy Pitchford is not to blame, despite what some people have said. Reed says that this is a "common problem in the industry". It is not the fault or any one person. To suggest otherwise would be wrong.
The Borderlands film is an action comedy that features a stellar cast, including Jack Black, Kevin Hart Ariana Greenblatt Jamie Lee Curtis Florian Munteanu and Cate Blanchett. Blanchett said she was inspired to take the role by a "touch covid madness", after gardening for months. PC Gamer has sent Joshua Wolens, a hardy volunteer to watch it. Check back tomorrow to see if it's all old claptrap.
