The director of the Minecraft Movie reveals that Jack Black played Steve in a'methodical' way, and he became obsessed with finding lapis lazuli during filming breaks.
Every time I hear about the Minecraft Movie I am surprised, but I haven't been surprised by the fact that Jack Black became so absorbed into his role as Steve, he went on an lapis lazuli spree.
According to Jass Hess, the director of the film (via IGN), Jack Black is "as methodical as it gets." Black, instead of sending spiders to coworkers to kill, decided to spend every spare minute playing Minecraft.
Hess says, "He was always in his trailer when he took a break. He was just slaying in the Overworld." "[The producer, Torfi Frans Olafsson, senior director of Minecraft] set up a special server for the crew. Jack became obsessed with finding lapis lazuli. Every day, I would pop in to check the scene, and he was dressed as Steve, playing the game. It was a very surreal experience.
Before the Caves and Cliffs Update 1.17, Lapis lazuli was classified as a rare ores. This changed with the new ore distribution. The resource is now classified as uncommon. It can be found from levels -64 up to 64 but is easiest to find on layer 1. If you're Jack and are reading this, please try strip mining in the area.
Lapis lazuli can be used to enchant weapons, books, armor, and tools. It's a great material to keep around. It can be used to make fireworks, blue dye, and to change the sound of note blocks into a bass drum. Black is not just a good Steve because he's familiar with the ores.
Frans Olafsson: "He's a blank page on which you can write your story." "But it was also a chance." You may not have imagined Jack Black playing Steve, but if you understand what I mean, this is the Steve that is Jack Black. This is the Jack Black Steve. I am Steve, you are Steve, Jared's Steve and everyone else has been Steve.
