You're browsing Steam for upcoming games and you see a name that makes you do a cartoon spit take. Marines Vs God is being developed by none other than the Marines vs God Team. It's an eight-person multiplayer game in which seven players yell "ooh ra" as they rush forward with guns blazing and the other controls a giant hand from a top-down perspective and does all they can to screw the tiny humanoid squad.
The Steam store description screams, "Put the fate of your soul on the line and experience the power natural selection in a battle with God", making it clear that this game is not for creationists. The four marines are dropped on a cursed planet with a bomb which explodes and "leads doom of God". This makes you wonder why God is hindering things rather than helping.
The Godly abilities are selected from a list of 100 Godly powers, with some poetic and vague descriptions as to what you can expect:
- Anthem of extinction damages all units
- Unleash psi Storm Destruction
- Use deception and illusion
- Deep power to call creature the night in broad daytime
- Summon reactive poisonous dragon
- Marines are tricked by fake supplies.
- Lethal horror effect
- Spawn society breaker boss
- Evolve into a new clandestine life form
- Drop an atomic bomb
God is mysterious. You may wonder why he doesn't just snap His Holy fingers and blink the marines out of existence. The God player can select up to seven abilities for each match, and they can also choose their favorite God. Here's where things get a bit wacky: Okay, Zeus definitely is a god. I'm not sure about "Necromancers, Demonologists, Gin, Kings of Robots Matriarchs, Juggernauts", let alone the TikTok star Anar Dreams. If this all sounds familiar, especially Zeus taking on an entire platoon, it's because Arma 3 Zeus mode offered similar mayhem in a decade's time, but in a simper sandbox.
Marines Vs God allows marines to betray their corps and work with their deity. The game's modes include one god versus multiple marines and one god and marines working together against a group of marines (with abilities designed to confuse a marine team that should sync well with this setup).
Marines Vs God will be released in 2025. A playable demo with one map is available soon. The scope of the game doesn't seem to be outrageous, and a trailer was released that showed plenty of gameplay from both perspectives. I find the whole setup appealing, but seeing a tiny 'lil Marine blasting away at a giant polygonal sky-face, and then being able to watch the incoming firing from the latter perspective is a lot of fun. It also seems to have a thing against gods, urging players to "remember that they were once humans too." I'm not certain about the scripture, but when God is going to be destroyed anyway, it may not matter.
