The movie deal for Kingmakers, a game about a tank that goes back in time, is still a mystery.

Kingmakers is an arcade game that asks a simple question: What if, with an M4 tank, you could travel to medieval times and give primitive screwheads a good kicking? It looks fun, but there is no release date yet. It does, however, have a movie deal.

Story Kitchen is handling the big-screen adaptation. This name may be familiar to you: it's the company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog films. It has also announced plans for movies based on Dredge and Sifu as well as a television series based upon Disco Elysium and animated series based upon Vampire Survivors or Tomb Raider. According to its website it holds the rights to a number of other game properties including It Takes Two and Just Cause.

Dmitri Johnson of Story Kitchen stated that "the action, world-building and fascinating sci-fi in Kingmakers makes it a perfect combination to build a new franchise in Hollywood."

It's okay, but it's a lot to put on a video game that looks like the YouTube videos where one Terminator is pitted against a million Zombies. The Steam page is primarily focused on Kingmakers's combat simulation, and does not really get into the story at all. It only says that you are going back 500 years to "change the course of a violent war and maybe, with luck, stave off an apocalypse."

This type of thing can work without George R.R. This type of thing can work without George R.R. Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann is based on the idea, "What if someone went back in history on a dirtbike?" Army of Darkness was based on the premise "What if someone went back in history with a shotgun?" The 1980 film The Final Countdown starring Kirk Douglas and Katharine Ros, with Charles Durning and Katharine, is perhaps the best example.

It's not that Kingmakers will make a good film. At this point, we don't know if the game will be good. There's a lot of material already available to draw inspiration from.

The game Kingmakers, not the film, is due to be released later this year.
