It's hard to understand how much a large, curved, ultrawide screen can enhance the gaming experience until you've used one. You feel immersed in the world, and depending on the game you are playing, a flat-panel monitor can look dull by comparison.

What exactly do you get for 295 dollars? The ASRock Phantom Gaming (a name which is easy to pronounce) PG34WQ15R2B has a 34-inch VA screen with a resolution 3440 x 1440, and a refresh frequency of 165 Hz. You can find better ultrawides, but not at this price.

Even though it isn't an OLED, the VA panel offers a good HDR experience. When we reviewed this monitor in HDR mode, we found that SDR content looked great. "Running a Cyberpunk 2077 game in HDR mode looks punchier and more vibrant, which is not universally true for this type of monitor," said Jeremy, our monitor expert.

It's only certified DisplayHDR 400, and it doesn't have any local dimming. So it's not going to be the best HDR experience, but it is better than any IPS display, for sure.

VA panels aren’t as fast as IPS or OLED displays, and the MPRT (mean pixels response time) mode destroys the overall brightness. Switchable pixel-overdrive can also cause some overshooting, inverse ghosting and other issues.

I would recommend that you put it in HDR mode and calibrate the monitor to find the right balance between color, brightness and contrast. Then, just leave it. It'll be perfect for gaming and watching media.

You'll want to use only the DisplayPort 1.4 socket, and not the two HDMI 2.0 sockets. HDMI 2.0 supports a refresh rate of 100 Hz. To get 165 Hz you'll need to use DisplayPort 1.4. You also don't get extra USB ports, but for some strange reason, you get a built in Wi-Fi antenna. It's odd, but not unwelcome.
