This 7.1.2 surround sound speaker strap-on will transform your gaming chair into Cerebro, allowing you to channel your inner Professor X.
My gaming setup ten years ago looked very similar to what it does now. However, there was one notable difference: I used a massive 5.1-speaker system back then, while I use a headset today. Cerebro, a company that makes audio equipment, believes it can bring back such setups. Sorry, the Colo GCS from Cololight.
Cololight has taken 11 speakers and created a 7.1.2 audioscape (seven primary, one low-frequency, and two "overhead" channels), but instead of scattering them around your gaming space, it has placed them in a U-shaped ring which straps to your gaming chair's backrest.
Sincerity be damned, I can't describe how amazing the thing looks. And I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Let's begin by examining the features that make it look good.
Cololight cites a number of reasons why it's better than headsets or soundbars. These include comfort, space requirements and the fact that these setups only simulate surround-sound. All of these are valid complaints, but the right gaming headphone will be comfortable to use for many hours and soundbars with sub-woofers aren't particularly massive.
Nowadays, the idea of simulating surround sounds is less relevant. Most gamers are more than satisfied with the sound that a stereo headset produces. A true surround system does...err...sound epic.
It would be unfair to judge without having tried it, but there are a few things that stand out. The first thing that stands out is the fact that the system is so close to the head. I wonder how often one will bounce their bonce off of it just by getting up from a chair.
The second thing I'm concerned about is the stability and strength of the attachment system. The whole thing is strapped to the chair's headrest. Since the Colo GCS was designed specifically for e-sports/gaming chair, there's a possibility that it won't fit your Chair very well.
I'm still unsure about how much the system can move. Are these arms rigid or will they flex when playing games?
A wire hanging down the back of a gaming chair increases the risk of it being run over as you move around. A wireless gaming headset will never allow this to happen, and it's unlikely that a wired headset would either.
I'm sure that some gamers are going to think that this is a great idea. Cololight Cerebro's webpage only refers to Indiegogo --. However, in a document that was sent to us, Cololight is asking $599 for its Colo GCS.
It's cheaper than an entire surround system, but it costs a lot more money than a decent gaming headphone. Even if it doesn’t live up all the claims, it will give your gaming room a full Professor X vibe.
