This new tabletop role-playing game is essentially Monster Hunter and Delicious in Dungeon. You can even use a giant fryingpan as a weapon

Wilderfeast, a tabletop RPG that was originally kickstarted in September of last year, is now available in both physical and PDF formats. It combines elements of the videogame Monster Hunter and manga/anime Delicious In Dungeon. The game is about tracking giant magical beings, slaying in battle, then cooking them up into a feast.

I was a backer who received an early PDF version. I haven't played or run the game yet but it is impressive to read. The beautiful art and layout frame some clever rules in an inviting environment. It's a bit more friendly than Monster Hunter, with a focus on living in harmony with nature. Your party is also expected to hunt creatures that are corrupted by enraged curses. It's a sign of respect to chop them up and cook them.

Your characters also become monsters. You can gain some of the traits and powers of a monster every time you eat it. If you eat a plate of giant legs, you could gain webbed toes or a camouflaged skin tone. You might also get bulging thighs that are perfect for leaping. You could get piercing eyeballs or a pair of beautiful wings if you eat fried birds.

Even the weapons that you use are ancient cooking implements. When you create your character, you choose your speciality. This is like a class and determines what abilities and skills are available to you. You can become a close-up brawler who is fire resistant and can carry others safely by using a giant pair enchanted of oven mitts. You can use a huge frying pan to block monster attacks, throw it like a discus or even taunt your enemies with its shiny surface.

Monster hunts have a lot of tactical depth, even though the system is designed to be light and streamlined. Before engaging in battle, you must track creatures through their environment to learn how they interact with local ecology. You can target specific body parts in order to reduce the beast's abilities or stop certain attacks. Each of the 40 original creatures has their own unique combination of traits and behaviors to adapt to.

It seems like a good time to put this game on the table, given the popularity of the Delicious In Dungeon anime as well as the growing hype around Monster Hunter Wilds. The core book, as well as a variety accessories, can be purchased from the creator Horrible Guild’s website. They are also available through Modiphius, a major tabletop publisher. DriveThruRPG also offers the PDF version. There's even a quickstart if you're just interested in a taster before you buy the whole thing.
