This toilet attachment uses AI with a team of doctors to photograph, analyze, and report on the full scoop about your poop
As someone with IBS I am constantly reminded of the fragility of our digestive system. This is why Throne Science, a health-tech start-up, decided that the best method to monitor your food chute was to sell a camera you can mount on your toilet and let AI servers analyze what it sees.
We found the dirty details on the Throne - for that's what it's called - over at TechCrunch, and boy, was it eye-opening. Toilets that analyze the contents of motions are not a new concept, but replacing your lavatory with an'smart toilet' isn’t cheap. Throne is a camera system you can hook over the toilet rim to reduce some of the cost.
It comes with a Bluetooth transmitter which sends the results directly to your phone. The required app then keeps track everything it observes, and the result of the analysis performed on Throne Science servers.
These computers use AI to determine what the images show (so don't throw a rubber ducky into the pan to mess up the data). Based on the shape, the size, and the structure of your stools, they log how you move throughout the day.
If you're worried that other people's poop will ruin your toilet achievements, don't be. The system only activates when it detects an app-installed phone and an account created. You can also forget about privacy concerns as the camera only captures your bowel ejecta, and nothing else. All data sent to Throne Science will be anonymised.
That said, the company only added a privacy and security page to its website "at TechCrunch's behest," which isn't overly confidence-inspiring.
The Bristol Stool Scale is used by Throne Science to provide the results in a digestible format.
If I'm being honest, I'd rather ask my own doctor.
It's not a bad price to pay if you want peace of mind knowing that someone is always tracking your stools and giving you information about your gut health, eating habits, etc. The Throne is $299 if purchased now. However, the company states that this is a Beta version.
The app is subscription-based, which may be a turnoff for some. The Throne app is free during its beta phase, and you can get an additional 12 months if purchased now. However, once the app is in full production it will cost $96 per year.
You could also eat healthy and check your prize logs carefully before flushing. It doesn't take a piece of technology to determine if you should have eaten the week-old meal that you left in the back of your fridge.
