Webfishing developer thought that 'only 100 people would ever play it'. Thanks to the 24,000+ players who flooded in and played their'silly' project, they now know that there will be updates.
Webfishing is a little fishing game I can only describe in terms of "Club Penguin for tired, millennials that just want to vibe". It has been a sleeper success this year. SteamDB showed it attracting over 24,000 players concurrently, a steady rise it achieved through word-of-mouth since its release at the middle of last week.
After spending five hours on the game, it's not hard to see why. It's cool, the atmosphere is immaculate, it seems to be designed to foster a relaxed and inclusive community. The irreverent, tongue-in cheek grace is applied to everything. This, along with efforts to ensure that adults can sit in rooms for 18+ and talk about adult topics, has made it an excellent digital hangout spot as winter approaches.
Its creator West/Lamedev didn't expect the schools to flock to it. West wrote in a recent X post: "It has been a MONTH (?!?!) Since Webfishing launched, I wanted to thank you all for your support and attention. I can honestly say I thought MAYBE like 100 players would play it ever -- but here we are!"
Even studios with only a few hundred employees can be affected by unexpected success. West seems to be trying to catch up as the fondness for Webfishing grows. "I'll admit it, I'm still not sure about the future of Webfishing! I'm finally letting my brain rest after months of crunching numbers, and I'm slowly working out the details. I have a lot of ideas about content and systems that I would love to rework/make better."
Webfishing is a moment that I will never forget. This game was perfect for people to escape the world's current state. Will I continue to fish for trout for many years? Most likely not, and I am always happy to let good things go when they have to.
The progression systems are both charming and a lot of fun. It's gratifying to upgrade your rod and break through the 20-point barrier with a single click. The steady trickle of new clothing, props and the like also has me invested in earning that oceanic money. I'd be a happy wasp if we got even more.
"Thanks again, y'all," West concludes. "While Webfishing is in flux at the moment, this won't be my last time to see or hear you"
