A modder for Baldur's gate 3 has implemented real-time combat, just like the classic games. But you should wait until they figure out how to add a pause before diving in.
Tinybike, a modder for Baldur's Gate 3, has made the first steps towards creating a version with real-time combat with pause. Instead of everyone taking turns in the game, the action moves constantly, but you can pause to issue commands at any time. The WIP mod currently only has "real time," and does not have the "pause," yet it is already an impressive transformation.
I'm going to be honest with you: I think that real-time combat with pause was a disaster for our collective progress and the human spirit. Or at least for RPGs. I enjoy a lot RTWP, but I would still prefer something that is fully turn-based, or actionized. Not this weird middle ground, where my party members ignore my commands, or let their pathfinding lead them to circumnavigate the globe in order to reach an opponent, and I don’t notice until it’s too late, because everything pops off at once. I do, however, admire tinybike's vision for this game and its technical execution.
The modder describes his work as "very, very rough draft". He has posted a YouTube demo video that shows it off. In the video, Tinybike dives into the coastal ruins, near the Nautiloid accident in Act 1, and fights the bandits there in real time. Multiple enemies are moving and acting at the same time. Tinybike is flying alone in this video. In addition to implementing a pause function, party AI for characters that you are not actively controlling will also be an important component of a complete version of this mod. I'm curious to see if this mod will work in multiplayer at some point.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a great option for those who are sickos and swear by real-time with pause. You can follow tinybike's progress on YouTube, and they have also uploaded a prototype version of the Mod to github. But trying to play BG3 in its current state is a real challenge.
