The Borderlands movie barely made $8.8 million in its US box office over the weekend. This is only 6% of how much it cost to make, market, and distribute.

As a critic it's my duty to treat everything with grace. But I am confident in saying that Borderlands, which was launched to shocking reviews, did not do well. I trust the opinion my fellow PC Gamer author Joshua Wolens, who, after watching the entire thing, called it "tasteless, mush, that no one seemed to be interested in saving," and "an excuse for buying a bucket popcorn."

Variety reports that Borderlands, the movie, raked in an $8.8 million opening weekend in the US. This movie cost $115 million and another $30 million for marketing and distribution.

Addition of these costs means that Borderlands' US performance at the weekend earned about 6%. To put this in perspective, Borderlands needs to sell roughly 16 times more tickets to break even.

Granted, there are international releases to come, and as Forbes reports, 60% of its production budget has already been covered by presales--which just leaves, uh, approximately $58 million (again, combining production and marketing/distribution costs) to find after the fact before the cash starts flowing.

I would like to make a snide comment here, but my feelings are similar to those I had when I looked at Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. Not only did it cost Warner Bros $200 million but 86 people were playing the game on Steam at the time I wrote this (with a peak of 217 hours). It's sad. It makes me sad.

It's frustrating to think about how much was wasted, especially when the Borderland games are known for missing easy slam dunks. It has a killer visual style and, for most part, a fun gameplay. I spent about 58 hours playing Borderlands 3 and the DLCs.

It's sad that this has bled into the movie. I can see why Craig Mazin, the writer of HBO's The Last of Us, jumped off the movie train when it was still a mess.
