Treyarch accidentally added legacy items to Call of Duty Black Ops 6. They took them away and then promised to restore the tokens after realising that they couldn't put toothpaste back in the tube.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched with a pleasant surprise for players. The XP tokens that were left over from previous Call of Duty titles were in everyone's inventory. This made it easier to level up characters and weapons. These tokens are usually obtained by completing limited-time events, completing the battle pass or through collaborations.
Legacy XP tokens have been around for a while. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 & Modern Warfare 3 allow players to use cosmetics and items previously purchased or unlocked, as well as double-XP tokens.
This time, it did not seem that the feature was intentionally implemented. Activision stated that one of the most recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 patches erased legacy tokens. We can't have everything we want.
Black Ops 6 players also made a sudden 180-degree turn, from praising Treyarch and thanking them for the help to criticizing the developers for removing something that was widely requested. The players called the move "greedy", "a joke", and one player argued that legacy tokens had been disabled "to artificially increase [Treyarch]'s retention metrics." The story didn't end there. Over the weekend, players continued to tell Treyarch how upset they were by this change. It actually led to something.
Treyarch reports that a UI glitch allowed players to activate legacy XP in Black Ops 6 with the start of Season 1. "Unfortunately, this bug also introduced a potential risk to the stability of the game, which is why yesterday's patch was applied.
We are testing a way of implementing this change correctly in a upcoming update. This gives us time to test the stability of this feature before reintroducing it.
I'm not qualified for a comment on the stability of the game. It's easy to imagine how an unexpected increase in the amount of XP a player can earn could potentially throw a spanner into the works for future events that require XP, as players would be able to complete things that are time sensitive faster.
Treyarch continues, "In the meantime, players can activate any legacy XP tokens in Warzone." "Any tokens you apply in Warzone, will also be applied to Black Ops 6 if you change titles or modes. We will be sharing more information about this change in the coming weeks. "Thank you for your patience."
I'm glad Treyarch decided that legacy tokens are worth the time, effort, and money to figure out and reinstate. But let's face it, this feature is likely only available because of luck, not kindness. Treyarch would have kept this feature hidden if a UI error hadn't accidentally popped-up and allowed players to access legacy XP tokens.
