After a long wait, Cyberpunk 2077 now supports AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (or FSR 3 as it is more commonly known).
FSR 3 has been implemented in the new patch, which was released today. This brings the game up to version 2.13. Here's the menu:
- Support for AMD FidelityFX super resolution 3 with Frame Generating. This article on the Support site contains more information.
- Added support for Intel Xe Super Sampling 1.3.
- Now, it is possible to use both DLAA Ray Reconstruction and DLSS Ray Reconstruction simultaneously.
- Addition of a new "Utilities tab" in Settings. HDD Mode, AMD Simultaneous Multiple Threading (SMT), and Hybrid CPU Utilization options have been moved there.
- Other stability and Visual Fixes
FSR 3 with Fluid Motion Frames essentially AMD's response to Nvidia Frame Generation technology and DLSS 3. These technologies generate new frames based upon existing frame data, and insert them between conventionally produced frames. AMD's solution, which is software-based and not hardware-based, is more widely compatible with Nvidia's Frame Generation technology. However, AMD recommends that you achieve a minimum 60 frames per second in your game before enabling this feature. FSR 3 was explained in detail in our FSR 3 explanation. However, the frame rate boost that comes with FSR upscaling can be included as part of your baseline performance.
In a Cyberpunk support article, CD Projekt warned that "at lower frames rates, visual artifacts may be more prominent [and] frame pacing problems might also occur."
Since December 2023, Cyberpunk 2077 gamers have been able take advantage of FSR 3, thanks to a mod which replaces DLSS3 frame generation with FSR3 in any game. It works well, but as Nick Evanson, hardware writer, said, "a native implementation" will always be the better choice. Now you can make a decision.
You can also stick to the tried-and true. CD Projekt stated that they decided to support both FSR 2.1 as well as FSR 3, to give players the option to choose their preferred settings for visual quality and performance. This allows them to experiment, and find out what suits their gaming style the best.
