Bungie promises to address 'uncertainty" surrounding the future of Destiny 2 after massive layoffs in the last week

Bungie has had a bad couple of weeks. Bungie has had a bad couple of weeks.

Bungie is being pressured by Sony to get their house in order but it appears increasingly unable to do so. Parsons admitted that the studio had been overextended with various "incubation" projects and was losing money. But it's not clear how it will get out of this spiral. The Final Shape was intended to be the last Destiny 2 expansion. However, Destiny 3 remains a long time away, and Marathon is struggling. The studio recently changed its leadership, and Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier stated in a Friends Per Second podcast the current state of the development is "not good."

Schreier said, "There's a good reason why it was originally planned for this year but has now slipped by a year." "People I've spoken to are a bit pessimistic that it will even meet its current planned date, but we'll have to wait and see." I don't really know when it will be. I think sometime in 2025. I mean, I've heard a lot of negative sentiments about it. "At least a few months back."

Bungie's prospects have never been so shaky, and Destiny fans are understandably upset about it. Destiny 2 is not going to be cancelled by Sony. You don't kill a golden goose that you paid $3.6 Billion for only a few years ago. But the future of Destiny 2 and the studio behind it is in serious doubt.

In a recent Reddit post, the Destiny 2 Team acknowledged these concerns and promised that they would address them in the very near future.

The team wrote: "We are aware that recent Bungie changes have created uncertainty about the future of Destiny." "Rest assured that we remain committed to Destiny and our community, providing transparency and delivering regular updates on the game.

We'll be talking to you soon about the future of Destiny, and our plans for a multi-year journey. We'll let everyone know when we plant the flag for that date."

The message hasn’t exactly inspired confidence. This is hardly the first time Bungie has approached its players with a "trust us" and a promise to do better after whiffing in one way or another, and after multiple rounds of layoffs at what by all measures should be a successful, money-making game studio, company leadership--particularly Parsons, Bungie's CEO--is facing an open revolt among its players.

Redditor shieldoversword wrote: "The only way we are here is because leadership mismanaged the situation and a lot of talented developers who were absolutely cooking on TFS, had to be laid-off." "I want leadership to take some responsibility and have a general new plan for management to be able to sustainably retain all of the developers that make this game so great." The rest will fall into its place."

The latest This Week in Destiny, which resumed after last week's break to accommodate layoffs, said Bungie remains "dedicated" to "supporting our community with transparency and providing regular updates about the games" - a near-verbatim repetition of what it stated in the Reddit posting - and that "all of our previously-communicated game content plans remain unchanged."

Please excuse our dust for the next few weeks. The recent Bungie changes will present challenges we'll have to work through. Our teams may encounter a few bumps, but they are committed to keeping everyone informed and listening to what you have to tell us.

Currently, I think that the biggest concern for Destiny players is to hear what Bungie says.
