The new official mod support for Doom Eternal includes 'the exact same tools' that were used to create the original game.

Steam now offers official mod tools for Doom Eternal. It's been more than four long years since the last iteration of id Software’s long-running shooter.

Doom Eternal Mods are already available. You can browse through a large number of them on sites like NexusMods. The addition of official support for mods, and access to Doom Eternal's idStudio toolkit, promises to allow the creation of more complex mods.

Marty Stratton, id Software, said in his opening address at QuakeCon 2024, "Players can browse, download and play mods created by creators." "For mod creators, the portal is also a hub for managing and distributing their mods. With the idStudio Beta, we provide creators on Steam with the same tools that we used to create Doom Eternal."

Hugo Martin said that the new mod tools announced at QuakeCon are "professional-level tools" and will take time to learn.

It does look a bit complicated.

I thought that there might be some grumbling about the fact that Doom Eternal mod support is handled through a launcher instead of Steam Workshop, but it doesn't seem to be the case. It makes sense that id Software will also be bringing the mod viewer to the Windows Store version Doom Eternal. After all, id is a Microsoft company. Fans are generally too excited by the possibilities offered by these new tools to fret about the details of delivery.

The idStudio Tools are only available on Steam. Doom Eternal mod support is now available on Steam. According to the Doom Eternal mod FAQ, you can opt into the preview by right-clicking on Doom Eternal and selecting "Properties." Then, select the "Betas," tab, and then select "pcmod-preview" in the dropdown menu. Close all the windows, the game will automatically update and you are ready to play.
