Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdrees success deftly parries the 'extraordinary loss' caused by a cyberattack on FromSoftwares parent company

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree was a Moonlight Greatsword to Kadokawa Corporation's parent company FromSoftware, leading the gaming sector of the company to substantial growth in spite of "extraordinary losses" caused by a June cyberattack.

Kadokawa, as reported by Automaton recently published its consolidated results for the first fiscal quarter. According to the report, Kadokawa suffered losses of about 2,000 million yen ($13.5 million) due to the cyberattack that severely disrupted its services and led massive data leaks. The report does not fully detail the losses, but states that they "included expenses related to investigation and restore" and "compensation expenses for Niconico creators".

Kadokawa's profit fell by 10.1%. Kadokawa saw a significant rise in net sales, and an 84.6% increase in ordinary profit over the last year. Kadokawa’s video game division saw a growth of 80.2% year-on-year, totaling 7,744,000,000 yen. Sales of $52 million.

The report highlights "strong domestic sales", "increased repetition sales" of the base games as key factors for this growth. It states that both releases "driven powerfully" Kadokawa’s financial results in the gaming segment. Automaton noted that since the first quarter ended on the 30th of the June, the report only covers the first 10 days of Shadow of the Erdtree's sale. This means it moved some serious numbers in a short period of time. Kadokawa doesn't provide sales figures for Shadows of the Erdtree in their report, but it was reported that the DLC had sold 5 million copies within its first three days. It's no wonder that it gets a financial pat.

These figures are impressive, but they're not surprising considering the success of Elden Ring at its launch. Shadow of the Erdtree is a grimdark RPG that's arguably even better than Elden Ring. Tyler gave it a score of 95, describing it as "A stunning achievement which reminds me why i fell in love WithSoft's games."
