The release date of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has been pushed up. Also, the price has been revealed and it's raised some eyebrows.

The release date of the upcoming RePOP remaster has been accelerated in America and Europe. Originally scheduled to launch on September 25, the game will now launch two weeks earlier on September 12. It's a pleasant shock, especially when you consider that the game was originally supposed to be released a year ago, but was delayed until summer.

Some people were not pleased to learn the price of the game that came along with the date change. Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP costs $45 - not quite the eye-watering $70.00 of today's standards but some argue that it's still a lot for what they call a pared down version of a 12-year old game.

"Isn’t this a pretty barebones remake and the soundtrack removed or anything? One user on Reddit asked "Seems expensive," to which someone replied, "Just your classic AAA remaster." Overpriced, and barely updated." Another person wrote: "12-year-old game that was at best mid at launch is being sold for $45 when the improvements are negligible?" I guess they only have to ask for that amount of money because the game is only available on older generation consoles like the X360 or PS3 and there is no other way to play it.

The frustration is understandable. RePOP was originally pitched as a 2022 remake, but it changed to a Remaster last year. According to the original producer Yoshimi Yatsuda, this swap was a direct response to feedback from fans, but I'm not sure how true this is. Fans, including myself, had expressed concerns about the direction of the remake. However, I don't believe that the intention was to completely forgo a remake.

The official site advertises a soundtrack "based on original songs." I'm apprehensive about what they've substituted hits like Sleigh bells' Riot Rhythm or Toni Basil's Mickey for. This, combined with the fact James Gunn and Suda51--who both played a major role in the original's development- were not involved in the process-- makes it easy to see where the apprehension comes from.

This is the first time that Lollipop Chainsaw has been released on PC. This is what the marketing claims, despite the lack of a Steam product page at this time. The original game is still locked in console jail and will likely never see the light outside of emulation. I hope that RePOP will be as enjoyable for me as the original. I still quote Nick's decapitated lines, such "Rah rah it sucks to be a head", and "I fucked it up, it's a yellow" on a daily basis.
