Nightingale developers say they are 'not satisfied with' the game, it's reception, or player numbers. But they have big improvements coming.

Inflexion Games released a YouTube video last week in which CEO Aaron Flynn, art and audio director Neil Thomson and studio manager Michael McKinley discussed the current state and future of Nightingale. Inflexion's assessment of Nightingale was unorthodoxly honest: "We're not happy with where the game's at, we aren't satisfied with the overall feeling, we're also not satisfied with our players numbers," Flynn stated.

The candor of the video is admirable, despite its slightly uncomfortable feel. It felt as if the two developers expected me to scold or chastise them. Flynn said that since Nightingale was released in early access, the studio has been working to address "shortcomings" of the experience. They have added a singleplayer mode which was requested and made a number of improvements to the quality of life. Nightingale has received positive reviews in recent months, despite its Steam rating of "Mixed".

Inflexion has spent the past few months overhauling the overall gameplay experience. Inflexion hopes to give Nightingale a more structured adventure. The core concept of the game is to travel between dimensions in a gaslamp fantasy world. Thomson stated that Nightingale was "almost too free-form, too self-motivated when it comes to goal-setting." Inflexion is working on a way to communicate better to the player about where they are in the game, what goals they can pursue next, and the things they will be able do along the journey.

Inflexion has also worked hard to improve what everyone wants from a survival video game: building a cool home. Inflexion is increasing Nightingale’s build limits to allow players to place more pieces, and build “more creative, expressive estates.” Nightingale was a bit restrictive in terms of the size of the structures you could build before, but Thomson says the new build limit is "multiple times" larger.

Flynn concluded the video by saying that he is "extremely confident," that Inflexion will bring Nightingale up to a level that meets their own expectations. Thomson agreed with Thomson, stating that the studio has made "Nightingale but better." Inflexion hopes to release its latest update, which includes a number of improvements, later this summer.
