Starfield: Shattered Space promises cosmic horror, political intrigue, and up-close fights against giant alien spiders. And other things that we could do without

Bethesda released the first look at the planet Va'Ruun, the home planet for the sci-fi RPG Starfield. The company has two weeks left before the release date of Shattered Space.

Shattered Space's main hook is that the game is "completely handcrafted." You can leave Va'ruun’kai whenever you want, but the entire story takes place on that planet. The story revolves around a secret experiment gone wrong, which caused a large-ass hole in the space-time continuum, swallowing up a large chunk of Va'ruun'kai capital Dazra.

It's human nature to be power-hungry, but that accident on the grav-drive has also opened up the door for horrors from another world, who can appear out of nowhere and ruin your day.

Shattered Space is an odd mashup. The "All must serve", "Great Serpent" theme is reminiscent of Dead Space's cosmic horror, while the "pick a group" storyline is more Bethesda-style. Combat also promises to be more up-close-and-personal: The base game focuses primarily on ranged gun combat, but art director Istvan Pely says Bethesda is "closing that distance" in the Shattered Space expansion.

Pely says, "Space is terrifying," in the video. "Part of that is amplifying the aggression and chaos in combat." It will also help if you have giant space spiders swarming at your face.

The Shattered space expansion is included in the Digital Premium Edition. If you bought the base game, you could either buy Shattered Space separately for $30/PS26/EUR30 or upgrade to the Digital Premium Edition Upgrade for $5, which includes the Constellation Skin Pack, digital artbook, soundtrack and 1,000 Creation credits.
