Sega trademarks 'Yakuza Wars,' after Like A Dragon teases that the next game is going to be a surprise.

If you ask me, a series isn't complete until it has a decent "Wars", or "Clash of Clans" game. GTA: Chinatown Wars, Dune : Spice Wars, Star Wars : Empire at... Wars. Who knew about any of these series before they were dubbed with wars? I bet no one.

Sega has now filed a trademark application for Yakuza Wars. (via Gematsu). It actually filed it last July 26. We know nothing about it except that it is related to videogames, and it doesn't have the current Like A Dragon name for the Yakuza series.

The name suggests a spin-off game, perhaps akin to Sega's Sakura Wars RPG series, or a continuation of the clan battles system from previous games. I'm still holding out hope that it will be a forgettable mobile game. Or, in the worst case scenario, a sequel to Infinite Wealth. Last month, Like A Dragon's developers teased fans by saying that the next project was a surprise. A Sakura-flavoured sequel to Infinite Wealth would not be what anyone expected.

Like A Dragon is also known for its experimental spin-offs. There's a samurai, zombie, and Kiryu as a spy game. A new spinoff, which does everything differently, would be both a surprise to fans and in line with the way Ryu Ga Gotoku has approached games for years.

It's also a good time to do it. The fans have responded well to this recent reinvention of the main series as a turn based RPG. The most recent game earned 80% in PCG’s Like A Dragon:Infinite Wealth Review, and a show based on the original series will be coming to Amazon later this summer. I won't be upset if RGG studio decides to add a dating-sim-like spin-off to the pile of Yakuza content. Kiryu-chan's relationship with Majima has been a long-time desire of many.
