Age of Empires II in first-person view? Why not?

Overreign, a mod for Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition that was first released in 2021 converts the game into a first person experience. It's been around a while, but it was initially quite buggy. But creator Spriteblood persevered and now it looks much more stable. I first came across it thanks to a YouTube video by T90Official who specializes in AoE2 and shows what first-person PvP in a 1999 RTS looks like.

It's one mod that works exactly as you imagine it, with the 2D graphics proving to be a great fit for the new viewpoint. It works in the game's Skirmish Mode and lets you take control of one unit. From this perspective, the AoE2 World is both familiar and strange: as the buildings rise, it's almost like watching giant inflatables.

Spriteblood says, "I stopped developing the game in late 2022. Since then, I've only made a few bug fixes and small changes to keep it compatible and playable with the rapidly evolving Aoe2 DE." "I'm amazed that people still find and play this today. It is amazing that a standalone mod launched five years ago still gets played 2-3 times per day. "Thank you to everyone who played it."

It appears that there is something weird going on with the moddb pages, although I was able download it earlier. Be warned, this mod can be quite intensive on your hardware. Yuri Kot says that the mod is great, but it's RAM-heavy. "In late-game (with many units), it eats my 32GB like a breakfast and freezes every few seconds."

PCG's Morgan Park pointed out that this all reminds him of Age of Doom, a brilliant-slash-bizarre mod that uses the Age of Empires 2 engine to make Doom into a third person isometric RTS shooter. Both games are great companions, and Age of Empires 2 has a long-lasting legacy, just like Doom. It's been 25 years since its release, but the game still receives official DLC.
