Asmongold, who is a member of OTK, says that he needs to "fix my f***ing Life" after a racist rant against Palestinians.
Twitch streamer Asmongold announced that he will be stepping down from his positions with OTK Media and boutique computer builder Starforge Systems to focus on becoming "a more improved version of myself" for everyone.
Asmongold (real name Zack Hoyt) sparked outrage this week with his racist tirade against the ongoing genocide in Gaza by the Israeli military, which has led to the deaths of over 42,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the UN. He said that after describing Palestinians in terms of "terrible people," who had genocide "baked" into their laws, they were not the same as him. They come from a horrible, inferior culture. It is a culture that kills people because of their identity and is antithetical to all Western values. It is a culture that is inferior in every way.
The outcry for his "zackrawrr' account on Twitch, which was suspended, was swift and fierce. A half-hearted apology, "my bad," was widely viewed as being overly flippant, dismissive, and dismissive. Asmongold is now taking it one step further. In a video posted on YouTube, he announced that he was stepping down from his role as CEO of OTK, a company he founded in 2020 and its Starforge Systems division.
Asmongold said, "I've slowly devolved into the most mean, rude, nasty and callous version of myself," near the beginning of the video.
"I think that in the last two years I have not been able to fulfill all of my responsibilities to them as a leader, and I believe that I've let many people down." This experience has taught me that I must get my mind in order. I need to get control of my mind. I need to get my life under control.
"Everything in my life is basically fucked. I'm going to take a step away from all that. I'm gonna step down from my leadership role at OTK, Starforge, and everything. I want to, and they're okay with that. They respect that. I want to do it not only for them, but also for myself. I want to be the best version of myself.
Starforge, while OTK hasn't publicly commented on Asmongold’s situation, shared a message via X saying that they had "mutually decided to part ways."
Asmongold's video has a central theme of self-improvement, and it begins with what appears to be an introspection. He called his comments about Gaza "horrible, disgusting, and mean-spirited." While he is still critical of religious extremism he said it was unfair to label everyone who belongs to that group as a religious extremist. He said that the media he chose to create and consume has helped shape "certain prejudices," he added, "that have no relation to my own real-life experience."
"Streaming is the entirety of my life." This is my life. I think the process has been very unhealthy for me. I think it's made me into a one-dimensional individual, which is why I don't even consider myself a person. It's as if I am Dark Souls. I'm going to be hollow or something."
All of this is taken with a grain of salt. I've seen far too many moments of 'come-to-Jesus' that were quickly forgotten after the public outcry passed. Asmongold's reputation doesn't encourage unrestrained hope. Subsequent comments made by the streamer in the Asmongold subreddit suggest that meaningful change is also a distant prospect.
"The vibes, and feel of the stream in recent times has been more tense. A lot of this is my fault," wrote he as an explanation for his apology. If you think my first stream will be Dustborn and promoting Sweet Baby then I think you will be disappointed. I'm not changing much other than trying to be a little more positive and less mean spirited."
In a reply to one comment, he also reassured followers, "Don't worry, I'll react to a DEI=DIE gaming video first day back to stream," and in another he asserted that "a lot of the laws over there are insane and I completely disagree with them and I think they're disgusting," a not-especially-meaningful shift in verbiage from "culture" to "law."
Asmongold, despite his obvious apprehensions said he would like to visit Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or Dubai to see for himself what it's like. This is perhaps a little aspirational right now. In the short-term, Asmongold has more realistic, life-oriented objectives: regular bedtimes, cleaning his house, and, presumably, once his Twitch ban is lifted, a consistent streaming schedule.
"I want to lead a normal, everyday life," he said. "I want to spend a little less time streaming, and more time creating videos and doing things that I enjoy.
