'Britain’s Bill Gates' is among six missing after superyacht accident off coast of Sicily. 'We should've found something by now.

Six people are missing, including British entrepreneur Mike Lynch. A superyacht that sank during a storm off the coast Sicily is believed to have sunk with 22 people on board. The Guardian reports that there were 22 people onboard the vessel when it sank. 15 of them have been rescued, including an infant, by the Italian Coastguard and firefighters. One person has died.

Three Britons remain missing. Angela Bacares and Lynch's daughter Hannah, 18 years old, are among them. Two Americans and a Canadian have also gone missing.

The Italian coastguard released a statement that reads: "This morning, at around 5:00 am following a violent thunderstorm, a 56 metre yacht named Bayesian flying a British flag sank close to Porticello."

Local reports stated that the boat sank when it was hit by a waterspout. A waterspout is a mixture of wind and water which can form during storms. It is often called a mini-tornado. The BBC reports that the waterspout was seen by fishermen off the coast around 3:55am local time. Shortly after, they saw a distress signal that may have been from the Bayesian. They found "scattered remnants of the sailboat floating on the water" when they approached.

Eight of the rescued, including a baby, are in stable condition in local hospitals. The captain of the nearby boat told journalists that he had taken 15 survivors off a life raft and that the Bayesian "heeled" (listed to one side) just before it went down.

The mother of the one-year-old girl saved her by holding her daughter's head out of the water and screaming for help. The woman, identified by the BBC as British national Charlotte Golunski, said: "It was dark." "I couldn't keep an eye open in the water. I was screaming, but all I heard around me were other people's screams.

Angela Bacares, the sole owner of Revtom - a company registered on the Isle of Man - owns the Bayesian. The luxury yacht is capable of carrying 12 guests, and a crew consisting of ten.

Lynch is most famous for founding Autonomy Corporation, a software firm that was purchased by Hewlett-Packard for $11.1 billion in 2011. In recent years, he was in the news when HP filed a lawsuit against Lynch and other individuals over the sale. HP claimed that they had exaggerated the firm's figures and misled regulators in order to trick HP into the purchase. Lynch was extradited from the UK to the US and won the case in early this year. Lynch, dubbed "Britain’s Bill Gates" is a fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) and the Royal Society.

Lynch said that she was looking forward to returning home to the UK to be with her family and to continue innovating.

Divers and helicopter teams are still involved in the search by the Italian Coastguard. They located the wreck about 50 metres below the surface. The operation will continue throughout the night with additional specialist teams arriving at the scene.

"We think the bodies must be there," Francesco Venuto, of Sicily's civil safety agency, told the BBC. "We've searched all day long with helicopters and boat, but we've found no bodies." It would be absurd to think that we haven't found anything yet, given the conditions.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said, "We are in touch with the local authorities after an incident in Sicily, and stand ready to provide support to British citizens affected."
