Cards Against Humanity sued Elon Musk for 15M dollars, alleging that SpaceX invaded a land plot it owned in Texas: Go **** yourself, Elon Musk
Cards Against Humanity has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk's rocket venture SpaceX. The company claims that Musk's firm turned a plot it owned in Texas into a construction site without permission or, in its own words, "completely fucked it" with "gravels, tractors, space garbage." Photos of CAH’s Texas lot, which was once vacant, show piles on the land of construction materials. SpaceX is allegedly using this land without permission to store materials for its Starbase headquarters and Launch Site.
Why would a Chicago-based card game maker own land in Texas? Cards Against Humanity is known for its political publicity stunts. As an anti-Black Friday joke, they once sold 30,000 boxes labeled "bullshit." In 2017, they crowdfunded the purchase a plot of Texas land near the US Border to "take a standing against the construction of a Border Wall."
Reuters reported that Cards Against Humanity had maintained the land for the past few years. Last year, a local homeowner noticed SpaceX was using the plot, and notified a CAH executive. CAH claims that after discovering SpaceX's trespassing on its land, the rocket company gave them a "12 hour ultimatum" to accept a lowball price for their land. CAH chose to sue.
CAH's reputation for executing its stunts is a part of its identity. This is in addition to the fact that it's illegal to exploit land without permission. It didn't make a mockup of the "bullshit", it actually mailed people bull feces. The company claims that if it doesn't now protect the land purchased on behalf of its supporters, its reputation will suffer.
"Our reputation as a company which makes outrageous promises, and keeps them, is on the line!" The game publisher wrote. "We promised to use every legal tool available to protect this country from bullies such as Trump and Musk, who is spending millions to elect Trump and wants to build a stupid wall. If we don't act now, why will anyone trust us again?"
If CAH wins the $15 million it is after, CAH will split the net proceeds between the 150,000 subscribers that contributed to the purchase of the land, sending them "upto $100" each. The original land purchase cost $15 per subscriber.
Not only the card game has complained about SpaceX's project at the southern tip Texas. The Reuters article I linked above describes rushed, shoddy construction and large donations to Texas politicians in order to clear the way. It also mentions angry locals who believe their concerns are not being heard. "SpaceX is good for SpaceX, and the elected officials who helped it come here," stated one resident who refused to sell her land to SpaceX. "All Elon Musk did for me was destroy my dreams."
Cards Against Humanity has made a copy of its legal complaint available online at elonowesyou100dollars.com. I've sent an email to SpaceX for a comment.
