Crusader Kings 3 has become the latest videogame to receive a comic book.

Crusader Kings 3 is not prominently featured in the list of games that I would expect to have a comic book tie-in. We are only a few weeks away from Paradox’s grand strategy game, Many Roads to Power getting its own free comic. This serves as a prequel to Roads to Power.

This mini comic, which will be available on CK3's site and Steam from August 22, will chronicle the rise and fall of the Byzantine emperor Basil. You'll be able play as him once the expansion launches September 24.

Our friend Basil had a fascinating rise to power. He was born as a Macedonian villager and married the mistress of Michael III before assassinating Michael III and taking over the throne. Good for him.

There have been worse adaptations. We live in a universe where Battleship has been turned into a terrible alien movie. Crusader Kings 3 uses medieval nobles as a way to tell stories of murder and civil conflict. History is filled with comic-book worthy nonsense.

It's at least something to read as we wait for what could be CK3's biggest expansion. Roads to Power will let us play as landless aristocrats and adventurers, plotting to power with cunning. We'll eventually rise to the position of Governor, where we can influence royal courts and make power grabs. Or we can live it up as a leader of a mercenary or bandit group.

It's a Byzantine expansion with new mechanics, events, and activities, such as chariot races. You can also get new assets to make your nobles glow.

Paradox has had a rough time in recent years, with the botched launch and cancellation of Cities: Skylines 2 as well as the delay of Prison Architect 2. It needs a victory. Maybe Roads to Power is it.
