Dev studio returns to Croc 20 years after ceasing to exist in order to remaster the PS1 smash Croc and it's destroyed our relationship.

Yesterday, news I didn't expect to see hit my inbox when, like a summoned spirit of my childhood, Argonaut Games announced that it would be remastering Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, a PS1 platformer from the era.

If you are unfamiliar with Argonaut, it was a British developer who created games such as Buck Bumble, which had one of the most bizarre themes ever, the original Harry Potter games for the PS1, and Croc 1 and Croc 2. The studio also worked on the original SNES Star Fox.

Argonaut was liquidated in 2004 and relegated to the dustbin of the past. Yesterday, for reasons I can't quite understand, the company announced it was bringing Croc back to life.

This is fantastic news for me. Croc is the game that almost single-handedly made me beg my parents to buy a PS1 in 1999. (It was also available on PC and Saturn but I didn't know this at the time.) I saw the platformer in action (which, if I remember correctly, is quite similar to Spyro) at a friend’s house and immediately knew that it was the best videogame ever created. I had to play it.

I finally got my PS1, but never got Croc. I chose Metal Gear Solid 1 instead, and 007 Tomorrow Never Dies. This set me on the path that led me to become the man I am now. The news of the remaster has me excited to see if it is worth playing.

If my so called colleagues from PC Gamer do not poison my mind first. When I announced in a jovial manner that the game would be revived by the team Slack the news was met with slander and calamity. Robin Valentine wrote: "A game that my old editor called 'A Croc Of Shite'." Jake Tucker agreed moments later: "I was typing Croc of Shite." Andy Chalk, a veteran newsman, told me via email: "I heard it's a Croc shite."

Croc, on the other hand, is alive and well and will be coming to PC. It'll feature a "Crocipedia", a wonderful Croc archive, similar to Nightdive's Quake Remasters, to spread the word about Croc. There's still no date or list of stores, which makes it possible that Tim Sweeney bought some sort of limited-time exclusive for Croc.

This article has been updated to reflect that the original Croc was also released on PC and Sega Saturn.
