Doom E1M1 remake in Doom Eternal honestly is kind of quaint

E1M1 is the first level in Doom 1993. It's legendary for many reasons. One of the reasons it's so legendary is that a lot of people played it over the years. Now that the new collection of Doom 2 and Doom has been released, it's even more popular.

A modder by the name of Bloodshot1 released a cute little remake using Doom Eternal's Pistol Restoration Mod. Here's the full playthrough from a YouTube channel.

Frankly... E1M1 looks great when you play Doom, but it looks a little barebones in Doom Eternal with its modern graphics, engine and models. This is a promising student's first game design project, using assets from a store that offers free downloads. It's still an excellent level design, but today's games are much more extravagant and expensive.

Bethesda's surprise release of Doom 2 and Doom as a free upgrade for enhanced edition owners earlier this month is perhaps the best example of how the concept works. It was packed with some great features, including a new engine, new music and some very pleasing graphical updates.

The new expansion was more than anything else, as it served to highlight how far the game design has progressed in the last 30 year purely in the context of Doom.

Dominic Tarason, a writer, said: "This is peak Doom 2024 and one of the best FPS campaigns this year." "Where classic Doom's city and military environments could feel abstract, the maps in this game feel like coherent places."

The design of games changes over time. But solid fundamentals, like those found in Doom, Tetris and other classics will remain fun no matter how far the industry advances. PC Gamer explored these ideas earlier this year with a feature that I encourage you to read: Doom is forever: The immeasurable influence of gaming's most famous FPS.
