Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a great game, but don't be scared of the 'Underdog" difficulty. If you're collecting all the sidequests and collecting collectibles it's perfect.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released on Thursday. If you're like me, you may hesitate to start a new game because you have to decide how difficult you want your high magic romp to become. After 37 hours of play, I can say that the Underdog difficulty, which asks you to "overcome punishing chances", is not too difficult.

This recommendation has some background information. I'm not terrible at videogames in general (I know, I know, hold the applause). I love my action RPGs and I also enjoy a good Soulslike, but Underdog doesn't give me that adrenaline rush. I'm more than happy that I chose it, as it feels like a goldilocks game for players who know the genres.

I've never had a problem with a second attempt. I can still take down enemies with relative ease. The game has forced me to rethink my tactics for some difficult fights. This is especially true if I have been stubborn enough not to give up on them when I am under-levelled. I've been able to balance the right amount of butt-clenchers with being able cut through Darkspawn and Venatori mooks as butter.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard rewards exploration and side quest completion. While it is definitely more action than RPG in nature, the synergies that you build between your characters (and their incredibly impactful skill trees) are far more important to the player's power. The difficulty selection is misleading. It's not asking if you're ready for a technical challenge (I mean, the parry window is smaller, but I was still able to pull them off).

It's not asking how much exploring you'll do, but rather what level of exploration you'll be doing. If you're half-way through putting together your build, grab chests and tick off sidequests as they appear, I'm confident that Underdog is the difficulty that'll provide the right bite for the rewards that you're receiving--and that, conversely the default difficulty of "Adventurer" may bore you.

But don't worry too much. You can change your settings whenever you want, as long as you don't choose the hardest difficulty. You can also use the "Unbound" difficulty setting to play around with parameters if you don't care about timing your parries.
