Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s latest trailer is a big dragon fight, and I now know what class I will play.
I felt my neuron fire when I saw the mage in Dragon Age The Veilguard's new trailer teleport out of an attack as if it were nothing. Mages are known for their flashy spells, but I won't play another class if I can dodge-roll in Dark Souls with magic.
I admit that I love wizards in RPGs. Dragon Age: The Veilguard knows how to do it. While we've already seen a lot of the action in the game, it was thrilling to watch the boss fight unfold without interruption during the trailer shown at today's PlayStation State of Play. It's impossible to see the RPG systems in action better than a battle that requires your entire toolkit.
You can blink in the air to avoid Corius, when he lunges and snaps his jaws. The cooldown is just long enough that you can't spam the dodge roll like you would in a Souls-style game. There are other spells you can use while the spell is recharging. For example, a short barrier spell that appears to nullify any attacks.
You can also create magical combos that are satisfying with your friends. In the trailer we see the mage instructing her friends to weaken the Dragon before pulling a meteor from the sky to inflict burns on it. Later, she pulls electricity out of air and engulfs the dragon in a huge AoE spell. It all sounds and looks like it will have a significant impact. This is something that earlier Dragon Ages did not have for me, compared to other action-heavy games at the time.
After reading Lauren Morton’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard hand-on preview, and now seeing this video, I think that it's pretty obvious that this one is the real deal. I'll be wearing my robes when it comes out on October 31.
