Ghost of Tsushima: Ghost of Yotei sequel announced. No word yet on PC release. Last one took several years.

Ghost of Yotei is a sequel to the 2020 Sucker Punch Samurai game Ghost of Tsushima. A trailer (attached above) was revealed during today's Sony State of Play Livestream.

Ghost of Tsushima was released on PC in early 2018. We gave it an 81% rating, calling it "a thrilling, engaging samurai adventure." As it took some time for Ghost of Yotei to reach our platform, we don't expect you to be playing it on PC by 2025, when the PS5 version is due to launch. As is usual with big PlayStation announcements the console version will be the focus for the moment.

Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch Productions, said on the PlayStation blog that when they set out to create a new Ghost, they wanted to maintain the core principles established in Ghost of Tsushima. These included the freedom to explore the world at your own pace and the beauty of it.

"We also wanted continue to innovate. We wanted to create something new but familiar. So we moved our focus away from the story of Jin Sakai and the island Tsushima and focused on the Ghost. We love origin stories at Sucker Punch, and wanted to explore the possibilities of a new hero in a Ghost mask and uncovering a brand new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yotei, a protagonist, a story to unfold and a region of Japan to discover.

Fans of Tsushima may also notice that this mysterious hero wields two katanas in the trailer. This is 100% more than Jin Sakai had on hand. The New York Times reported that Yotei's creative director Jason Connell said players will be able master both melee weapons as well as firearms.

Connell told the newspaper that "one challenge with open-world games is the repetition of doing the same thing over and over again." "We wanted unique experiences to counteract that."

The story, which Sucker Punch hasn't revealed much about yet, takes place in 1603, more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima.

Sucker Punch said that in 1603, the area was not under Japanese rule and was filled with snowy tundras and vast grasslands. It also had unexpected dangers. "It is a far cry away from the organized samurai tribes that lived in Tsushima and it's the backdrop for an original story that we can't tell."

If the recent trend is to be believed, Ghost of Yotei will be on PC by 2030. However, the optimist within me believes it could happen sooner than Ghost of Tsushima which had to go from PS4 to PS5 before it was ported to PC.
