Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is destroying the fighting game competition, with Steam's all-time record for Street Fighter 6 players nearly doubled.
Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero was released on Steam today, and boy, is it doing numbers. SteamDB reports that there are currently 121,330 active players. This is a huge number when put into context.
Remember June 2023, when Street Fighter 6 was released on Steam. Many said at the time that Street Fighter 6's launch-day concurrents for a fighting games were huge, and it was true. It compared favorably to Mortal Kombat 11 (35,147) and Tekken 7 (18,966), for example. Street Fighter 6 is currently at its highest peak ever of 70,573, which corresponds to the launch window. Dragon Ball is currently at 121.330 players.
I just refreshed the SteamDB and it is now up to 122 431. Wow.)
How does it compare with other mainstream blockbusters (i.e. games that aren’t fighting games)? Elden Ring, for example, has a record of 953 426 players, and Baldur's gate 3 has 875 343. PUBG and Palworld have the highest records at 2.5m and 2.1m, respectively.
Dragon Ball: Spinning is a relatively new game. Zero isn't a huge number, but it is a record for launching a fighting game on Steam. It's interesting for another reason: Dragon Ball is a massive series, but Sparking is even bigger! Zero's fighting style is quite distinctive, and the learning curve is steep. It's also fascinating because, when compared to Dragon Ball FighterZ - arguably a more approachable Dragon Ball offering - it's a clear victor (FighterZ's peak is a little over 44,000).
Our Dragon Ball Sparking: Zero Review was positive: "Sparking!" Zero is the best Dragon Ball video game we've played since the PS2 era and a generous love-letter to Toriyama’s classic series," Scott McCrae said.
