Netflix announces that Magic: The Gathering is still in production after a long silence.

Magic: The Gathering will get an animated series, and I can only assume that this is a joke from Netflix. No, this is real. No take-backsies.

For those who are unfamiliar, a quick history lesson: Netflix's Magic: The Gathering, in its 2019 concept was meant to be a landmark series, headed by the Russo Brothers, architects of MCU. It promised to "cross genres of suspenseful horror, drama, and thriller". The Russos quit in 2021 due to "creative differences".

Brandon Routh, the new voice actor for the show, said in an interview that the series no longer existed and that its cancellation is "old news".

Here's some good news: Netflix's Magic: The Gathering will be back on the menu soon, as announced in an avalanche trailers during the streaming service's Geek Week: It's happening! Netflix's MAGIC THE GATHERING animated show is currently in production. Showrunner Terry Matalas has partnered with Hasbro Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro.

A second press release, which is short on details, features some purple prose by the new showrunner who was most recently known for leading Star Trek: Picard. "Magic is a storytelling sandbox brimming over with iconic, complex character, extraordinary mind-bending abilities, and portals into every genre imaginable."

The teaser image does provide some useful information. The teaser image tells us that the series is now centered around Chandra.

I say pinballed, because in 2019, the Russo Brothers told Polygon to "get excited" for those who "love Jace & Chandra". Later, the show would pivot to focus on Gideon Jura's (voiced by Routh). It's back to Chandra and Ajani Goldmane, a rather large lion-man who I'm certain the internet will find perfectly normal. This is assuming that this thing comes out. If we compare this to Routh's comment, it's easy to guess that the show is no longer about Mr. Jura's impractical whip gauntlet.

I'm not completely optimistic, but I am at least a little hopeful. I know that fate has a cruel and funny sense of humor, and I won't even be surprised if there is another lack of information. Netflix's decision to re-announce it now shows that they are confident it will happen. Fingers crossed.
