Opera's promo reel is filled with unintelligible swearing. Oh, and Opera GX, the browser for gamers, has been updated a bit too
It is not a good idea to try and be cool with the kids. Opera's latest promotional video is a perfect example of this universal truth. It is off-key and cringeworthy.
A web browser.
The YouTube video, which Opera calls the Opera GX Hero Trailer, was released a few weeks ago. It promotes a refreshed version Opera GX - a browser that is ostensibly designed for gamers. Opera begins by calling every other browser "fucking dull", before promoting "shitposting", a core feature. Then, Opera casually implies that Opera GX users are probably porn-seekers and may want to avoid federal attention. Yes, really.
There are a few more zingers. As long as the ad for Opera GX remains online, which we doubt, you can view it here. You have been warned.
After all this, it's not easy to focus on the actual features of the browser that was launched for the first time in 2019. Here we go. The main changes are a refreshed design that puts an emphasis on "immersion", as well as more personalization options, and new features such as a "forced-dark mode".
The latter is essentially the ability to force a webpage into a dark, or presumably inverted, color palette that's ideal for low-light conditions.
The new visual design, known as "Underwave", is said to have a "sleek and game-inspired look" and also allows you to adjust the layout of your browser interface and add some transparency.
Other personalization options include fonts and sidebar and desktop icon stickers. The browser now supports AI-enhanced upscaling of video via Nvidia RTX graphic cards.
Opera has announced a number of enhancements to its browser, including a new Multithreaded Compositer for improved performance. All of these enhancements enhance what was already a browser geared towards gamers, with features and frills such as a suite of integrated applications from Twitch, Discord, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and Vkontakte to TikTok, WhatsApp and WhatsApp Messenger, not to mention X, Instagram and Instagram.
Opera GX has an ad-blocker built in, the ability for users to sync profiles, share links and flys across devices, a video overlay that appears when scrolling and a free VPN. It also offers controls to tweak RAM, CPU, and network parameters.
Opera's engineers have worked hard to create a browser that looks great and has a lot of interesting features. This ad campaign is a "shitpost", which is a distraction from the work they've done. We'll be watching to see how long Opera continues with its insufferably "edgy" marketing approach.
