I'm not going to lie: I found some great deals yesterday, when GOG's Halloween 2024 Sale went live. But I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a free game. GOG's sales are known for their free games. The next day, the disappointment is gone (I may have overstated it for dramatic effect). Return of the Phantom will be free for the following three days.
Return of the Phantom, originally released in 1993, is a point and click adventure based on the story of the Phantom of the Opera. However, there is some time travel, which I will not reveal to avoid spoilers.
It was well received back then: Computer Gaming World (which I cite as that's what i was reading in those days) took issue with its linearity ("Only 12-18 hours of gaming for the typical player" and my, how things have changed), but came away with a favorable assessment, praising the graphics, the "interesting dialogue," and the "plot with a twist," one that comes full-circle without being predictable."
Chuck Miller, a CGW writer at the time, wrote that "Phantom was worth a look." "Even better with a discounted price tag." You know what else? You won't get a better discount than a 100% discount. This is the lowest price you can get.
Return of the Phantom will be free on GOG through November 3. GOG's Halloween Sale is on now, and it has some sweet, sweet deals. FEAR, one the best shooters from the 2000s, costs only $1! ), runs until November 4.
