Steven Spielberg, a 'big PC gamer', proves impeccable taste with his declaration 'I only use keyboard and mouse.'
Steven Spielberg is best known for his movies. But the legendary director has a long history in the games industry. LucasArts employees remember him calling up for help when he was stuck on their classic adventures games. After the experience of filming Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg felt inspired to create a video game and wrote the first of what would become the Medal of Honor Series. Other dalliances include EA's Boom Blox - an excellent Wii game that's worth seeking out - and another title (codenamed LMNO), which was so ambitious it never made it past the prototype stage.
It's not surprising that the great man passed on his love of the medium to his children. Max, Spielberg's oldest son, has a career that spans both film and gaming. He has worked on games such as Assassin's creed: unity and is also the co-founder of Fuzzybot and its creative director.
Spielberg's son talks about his father in a new interview.
Max Spielberg says, "He loves games. He's the one who got me into gaming." "He's a PC gamer, and that's also a way for us to bond." He asks, "hey what's new, what Call of Duty game should I be playing? Send me a list of top five shooters and I'll download them so we can play together when you come to the house."
This is perhaps not surprising, given Papa Spielberg's involvement in Medal of Honor and his clear interest in creating cinematic war experiences in video games. Spielberg seems to really love this series. Max is asked if he has ever had a great recommendation. His answer is simple.
Max Spielberg laughs, "it's always Call of Duty. He loves Call of Duty and enjoys the campaign." He loves story games, and I try to get him Uncharted. I say, "It's Indiana Jones. You'd love this", but he always says, "I can't use controllers, I just use keyboard and mouse."
So: One of us, two of us, three of us.
Max remembers showing Lynked his dad and recalling with some humor the recoil he felt when he produced a controler for it. "He plays a lot mobile games. He's into Golf Clash, and stuff like that. Anything he can play sideways: 'Is the game coming to mobile'?"
Spielberg is a PC purist, not just a PC player. Max was not asked about his dad's PC setup, which you would imagine to be something on the Covenant level. Nor was Spielberg senior asked what he thought of Call of Duty remaking their own campaigns with varying degrees of succes. You realize that Indiana Jones and The Great Circle could have a very interested player, as long as the keyboard and mouse controls are up-to-snuff.
