This audio bug is causing a lot of fear among gamers using Windows 11 24H2 systems.
No one likes to be scared by their own gaming computer. I'm not referring to horror stories in which a glass pane breaks or a tube of coolant starts to leak. This story of terror is based on a (deafeningly loud) call that comes from inside the home.
Windows 11 users have reported a more frightening issue. There's no jumpscare switch for this one.
Windows Latest reports that Microsoft has confirmed that a bug exists that will increase your volume to 100% if using USB DAC audio device.
Microsoft has also listed a few situations that can trigger this bug. One of these is the Creative Sound BlasterX G6 USB Digital Audio Converter. You may be frightened if, for example, you put your computer into sleep mode, then manually wake it, or if your sound device is attached and then immediately removed.
Windows 24H2 has been plagued by bugs in the past. Last month, people who stored files on certain Western Digital SSDs were bombarded with blue screens. Data management is stressful enough, but it's even worse when Windows updates leave behind a large 8.36 GB cache that refuses to be thrown in the recycle bin.
This latest bug is likely to catch you every time, as there's no error message or anything else that will alert you to the sudden change to maximum volume. Microsoft has identified the problem as a "timing issue in the AudioEndpointBuilder Service" and is currently working on a solution. If you are running the latest Windows 11 version oryou have a USB DAC audio system, it may be best to unplug your audio for the time being.
You can feel a little smug if you have been putting that Windows update off.
