Monitors can be repositioned as desired, including tilting and swiveling, so that you can have a vertical view whenever you want. Once they're up, they stay there: It may take some fiddling to find the perfect balance between spring and sag. But mine have been in place for more than a full year and are still rock solid.
Monitor arms are worth it even if you do not need to move monitors. They make your desk less crowded and easier to clean. You can now pile other things on the desk.
