This week, the first, third, sixth, and indisputable best Fallout games will be free on the Epic Store.
It's that magical time of year again, children. The Epic Store freebies are so good, it's worth remembering your password (did you use the special character I asked for this time?--and awaiting the launcher update. It's the Fallout Classic Collection which includes Fallouts 1 and 2, as well as Tactics. Wild Card Football is not included in the Fallout Classic Collection, but it's still free.
PC Gamer's editorial history has been largely influenced by the freebie/deal posts of news writer Joshua Wolens, just like the one that you're currently reading. Josh is also 100% correct. Here's PC Gamer’s objective, unchanging ranking of the Fallout games, compiled from GOG news, Twitch and Prime Gaming posts.
- Fallout
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Fallout 2
- Fallout 4
- Fallout 3
- Fallout Shelter, Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel (Josh doesn't have them).
Well, I did play a bit of Fallout Tactics Brotherhood of Steel over a decade back and it was fine. Adequate. It's more traditional Fallout and finally with party control. But it's lacking in the series' openness, reactivity and sense of whimsy. It's fun, but without the Fallout-ness, it's a squad strategy game that lacks ambition and is clunky and crusty compared to the modern XCOM or Jagged Alliance titles.
Tactics has one ace in its sleeve, however: The Sum / Nous Aurons. This total conversion mod represents a different kind of apocalypse - one that is based on ecological catastrophe, and leaves an afterscape influenced with capital-A Anarchist political views. I've heard that it has the classic Fallout reactivity, attention to detail and a lot of other things I love. The last time I attempted to install it, I was frustrated by the process. We'll get there one day--watch this page.
It's a good deal of Fallout, but you have to deal the Epic Launcher. Its fiddliness, and lack of user-friendliness, has given me fits and forced me to buy free games just to have them on Steam, or GOG. What if we sweeten it up? I have four words to say: Wild Card Football baby.
I'm not sure where Wild Card Football should be ranked in our official ranking of Fallout games. I haven't even played it and I accidentally set my'restricted content' popup from the Epic Store too low. The Epic Store uses vile surveillance tools (cookies), to remember that I am underage (almost 30), another black mark against Epic.
Wild Card Football is a cartoonish version of America's favorite sport. It reminds of Blitz: The League which I remember watching my brother play on Xbox 360. One thing I don’t understand is why Wild Card Football is age-restricted, but not the original Fallouts that made Bloody Mess?
Wild Card Football may have a chance to unseat Tactics, but I'm not sure if it has any anarchist, cerebral total conversion mods. That would be the clincher. Fallout Classic Collection, Wild Card Football and other Epic freebies will be available until September 5.
