Welcome to the shooter bizarro universe: First Fortnite went FPS, and now Halo Infinite is adding a third-person mode
The world is going crazy. People wear shoes on their heads and hats on the feet. The cats and dogs live in harmony. Fortnite is testing a FPS mode. 343 Industries announced that Halo Infinite will have a third-person camera option in November. Hold your loved ones close. We are experiencing a metaphysical rupture.
343 Industries, first reported by GamesRadar announced this addition on X, "The Everything App". The video below shows exactly what you would expect: Halo multiplayer in third-person. It's a zoomed-out, slightly offset camera similar to the Fortnite style rather than the classico over-the-shoulder popularized by Gears of War.
It's not clear how the camera system will work in the game. However, one part of the video makes it seem like we'll have the option to switch between first-person and third-person. It remains to be seen if the new camera will only be available in certain game modes. Also, 343 has yet to announce any modes that will use it.
All jokes aside the comments on X "The Everything App" are quite negative. The comments on X, "The Everything App" are surprisingly negative. I've seen enough online vitriol to not be surprised, but "Fortniteification of Halo," “trend chasing," and "I'm never going to play again" seem a little extreme. I enjoy flipping between camera views in games that have this option. This isn't a new concept: Halo's third-person view has been available with heavy weapons since 17 years. It's clear that there's demand for it: A modder added the third-person camera to Halo Infinite campaign more than two years ago.
Halo: Combat Evolved's early footage showed a third-person shooter that looked very different from the FPS version we got. Halo Infinite, and the franchise as a whole, are in a tough spot following the massive layoffs at 343 Industries. But the third-person mode seems like a fun, if not perfect, addition to Halo Infinite.
