New Call of Duty Black Ops 6 gameplay shows us a chunk of the campaign that we'll forget once we click on 'Multiplayer.'

If you've been following the Call of Duty series for a while, you'll know exactly where we are with Black Ops 6 - the game has been revealed, and we know that there will be a major change to multiplayer (sprinting any direction), but now it's the time for the campaign. Activision showed six minutes of campaign footage at Gamescom Opening night Live. The gameplay consisted of a typical CoD dose: stacking on doorways and shooting a big armored man with a minigun.

It looks as good as any Black Ops Campaign, and it would be hard to do worse than the Modern Warfare 3 story. But let's face it: we're going to forget about Adler and the rest of his executive branch-approved buddies as soon as Black Ops 6's campaign is finished. I can't imagine a series where the singleplayer part of a game has less importance. The multiplayer is where CoD players spend most of their time, and we know very little about it. Treyarch will not reveal anything about this until the CoD Next event, which is later this month.

It doesn't mean we shouldn't be excited about another Blops tale. CoD is so familiar that it's impossible to predict that the elevator shaft would blow up while they were hanging on those cables. But I still enjoy my annual check-in with this big-budget FPS. We don't see many of these anymore. And while CoD's storylines seem to be getting shorter over time, Blops games manage to deliver a few genuine surprises like Cold War's Kremlin Infiltration mission.

I don't believe we should pretend that the Blops 6 Campaign is important. Activision used to make Call of Duty campaigns to have a lot of exciting set-pieces to use in trailers. I think this is more true than ever. Activision is so busy with this series - multiplayer, zombies and Warzone, as well as mobile - that there's an unspoken understanding among the community that campaigns are a fun appetizer for the game. When they are good, they set a nice tone for our next 100 hours of multiplayer. When they're not good, you wonder if CoD singleplayer should finally give up.

Black Ops 6 will be released on October 25, but you can play the multiplayer beta and the full reveal from August 30 to September 4!
