Conor McGregor is cut from Hitman "effective immediately" after a jury orders him $260,000 to pay a woman who accused McGregor of rape
Hitman developer IO Interactive announced that it had stopped working with MMA Fighter Conor McGregor. McGregor was added to the Elusive Targets in June. Following a civil court ruling that found McGregor liable for assaulting a woman accusing him of raping in 2018. All content featuring McGregor's character in the game is being pulled from sale.
The studio announced on X that "In light the recent court decision regarding Conor McGregor IO Interactive has decided to cease its cooperation with the athlete effective immediately." "We take this issue very seriously and cannot ignore the implications," the studio said on X. We will remove all content featuring Mr. McGregor in our storefronts as of today.
IO confirmed the court case is the recently concluded civil trial where he was ordered by the judge to pay over EUR248,000 ($260,000), to a woman that accused McGregor of raping in 2018. BBC reported that the trial lasted eight days, with three days of closing arguments. The jury took more than six hours to deliberate before reaching its verdict.
In a message that has since been deleted on X (via CBS), McGregor complained about the jury not hearing all the evidence and said he would appeal. McGregor stated that the judge's instructions and the modest award were for assault and not for aggravated damages or exemplary damage.
IO Interactive has made it clear that they are not waiting. The Disruptor Pack featuring McGregor DLC trailer has been removed, and the Disruptor Pack itself has been removed. However, it is still available elsewhere. IO stated that the content would be removed from all storefronts in the near future. The Disruptor arcade mission included in the DLC pack for paid players will remain available to them, but new players won't be able to purchase it.
McGregor had been a celebrity Elusive target before actors Sean Bean and Gary Busey. It was a high-profile acquisition for IO Interactive but also a risky one. Wikipedia describes McGregor's "controversies" as multiple assaults. He has also faced three other sexual assault allegations, but none of them resulted in charges.
