Silent Hill 2 received an emergency patch following a 'huge mistake in translation' that ruined the entire game for Italians

Holy Roman Emperor Charles V spoke in Spanish to God, French to men, and German with his horse. He reserved Italian for spoiling videogames. It is a delight to me to say that Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake, which is quite good, keeps this tradition alive. The developers had to release an urgent patch to prevent Italian-language players being able to see the entire game right from the start. Che brutta figura.

The 1.003.000 day one update for the game, as spotted by James Sunder fans on Reddit (via PlayStation Lifestyle), contained a major fix: it adapted the Italian translation for an early scene where--in the original advanced access version-- had fullysubtitled the voice line which was only meant to understood as garbled pieces. The top-rated comment for the patch on the Silent Hill Subreddit is "For Italians: Download the patch because there's a huge translation error that spoils something of the game within the first minutes."

I won't reveal what was spoilt until after the jump, but the line is inaudible in all other languages and is rendered in the subtitles as a jumbled mess of full stops and isolated letter. You are only supposed to notice the meaning of this line on a second watch, after you have a good grasp on all the twists and turns in the story. Spoilers for the line in question are ahead.

Mary's garbled lines are heard over the radio at the beginning. James claims he is in Silent Hill looking for his wife. However, he is not well and has blocked out the fact that he killed her. You find this out at the end. The garbled radio question she asks is "Why did I kill you?" This is a humdinger to drop on Italian-language players right at the start.

Fortunately, this line didn't spoil our cisalpine brothers. Bloober was alerted to the error by players who had advanced access to the game. A patch was released in time for the first (official) release day.
