Netflix's animated Tomb Raider looks like an exciting, globetrotting adventure even if the monsters and magical effects are a bit overdone.

Netflix's content-maw is bursting with slick animated videogame shows. I can only warn you now before you get washed away. What's the latest wave heading your way? It's Tomb Raider The Legend of Lara Croft! And it looks pretty good in its first trailer.

The show, which will debut on October 10, seems to be attempting to reconcile Lara’s various videogame eras. She's a gritty and credible survivor, but she also has a wildly over-the-top hero who goes on improbable adventure. A dusty climbing-axe , anddual guns? A girl can have it all.

It looks like it will work. It's important to give Lara a modernized feel to make her seem less ridiculous to 2024 audiences, but it's also nice that the grimness from the most recent trilogy is left behind in favor of a lighter and more colourful tone.

I like the amount of globetrotting. The semi-open world nature of the previous three games forced them to stay in one place each, while The Legend of Lara Croft takes us to every continent as well as possibly a few other dimensions.

It's the only thing that gives me pause. It seems to lean heavily on magic and supernatural elements, with a multitude of different monsters and a couple of ominously-glowy macguffins. There are also some trips to surreal dreamscapes. Tomb Raider has always been a bit strange, but this level of demon-slaying, spellcasting, and other supernatural elements seems more Trevor Belmont rather than Lara Croft. Would anyone remember if I said it felt a little like Jackie Chan Adventures?

It's just a trailer. It will want to show the most exciting, wildest moments and the scenes in between may be a bit more grounded. It's reasonable to give the show a chance, given Netflix's success rate with these animated adaptations. And, honestly, this is more like the feel I would love to see when they finally release a new video game, than another muddy misery fest.
