Casey Hudson, the former BioWare boss who launched the studio in 2021 but never released a game, is closing it.
Humanoid Origins is closing. Hudson was the former BioWare General Manager who launched the studio in 2021. Hudson announced the closing in a LinkedIn message, saying that despite efforts to shield Humanoid Origins from broader industry challenges, an unexpected lack of funding left us unable to sustain operations.
Hudson announced Humanoid Studios in June 2021 - six months after he left BioWare. In 2022, Hudson revealed that the studio was working a "multi-platform AAA game, focused on character-driven story in an all-new sci-fi universe." This sounded like it would be a good fit: during his long tenure with BioWare (from 2014 to 2017), Hudson led the development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as well as the original Mass Effect Trilogy.
Hudson claimed that the studio had "a playable prototype" by July 2022. However, only a few pieces vague concept art were ever shown to the public. Hudson said that the studio was "heartbroken" that it would not be able "to bring our new sci-fi universe to completion," and that the focus is now on supporting employees in their "transition to new employment."
Hudson wrote: "In our time working together, the team made incredible progress and demonstrated that you can do amazing work and foster a culture of creativity and fun." "We thank them sincerely for their talent and courage.
While Hudson's project has been abandoned, other efforts by former BioWare big names to recreate Mass Effect style magic continue. Mac Walters heads up a new NetEase Studio developing "a near-future action adventure game set in a breathtaking, mysterious world," while James Ohlen, Drew Karpyshyn, and others are working on Exodus "a new AAA science-fiction action-adventure RPG."
