Watch a latex-clad millionaire punch poor people out in the first gameplay trailer for Batman Arkham Shadow

The first ever gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham Shadow was shown at Gamescom's Opening Night Live show tonight, giving us a first look at the upcoming VR version of the adventures of the most therapy averse billionaire in the history.

The new trailer is a mix of exploration, dialogue and fisticuffs as the world's best detective stomps on dozens of underlings and flunkies to ensure that nothing will ever get better in the bleak and crumbling metropolis Gotham City.

The Rat King (I assume it's the Ratking) says, "A corrupt system has failed" at one point. "Are not you angry?" Fight back!" The man has a good point, right? If you live in a swamp of futility, hopelessness and despair, and all the people in charge can do is give you a sock to the knuckles from a guy dressed as a flying rat... I'm sure I would be angry too.

Let's get back to the main topic. Camouflaj, the developer of Batman: Arkham Shadow, says that it "reimagined" the core Arkham experience in VR and was inspired by "the intricate and interconnected level designs" of Arkham Asylum. The game will be set between Arkham Origins, and Arkham Asylum. It will feature Roger Craig Smith, the voice of Batman from Arkham Origins, in the title role. Other Arkham veterans, including Troy Baker, Tara Strong, Dr. Harleen Quizel, Mark Rolston, James Gordon, and Martin Jarvis, Alfred Pennyworth, will also appear.

Meta stated in a press release that "Batman Arkham Shadow will push Meta Quest 3 beyond its limits, giving the players an up-close view of Gotham City and delivering a Arkham experience which will resonate with longtime Arkham fans." "We are very excited about this game, and we can't wait for you to hold it in October."

Most "longtime Arkham fans" won't enjoy this game. It's a VR exclusive for Meta Quest 3 and, regardless of how good the game is, it's out of reach for most gamers. Batman: Arkham Shadow may be great for those with Meta's latest VR rig. But after almost 10 years, the last Arkham game was Arkham Knight, released in 2015. (No, I don't count Suicide Squad).

At this time, a release date has not been announced for Batman: Arkham Shadow. However, it is expected to arrive in October.
